- Metabolic and energy-pathway research studies the signalling that governs how cells take up, store and expend energy: receptor binding, the cascades downstream of it, and the enzymes that regulate which substrates a cell draws on.
The published work in this area is overwhelmingly preclinical: binding and activity assays in cell culture, then animal models. A finding in one of those systems is a description of that system, and reading it as anything wider is where the literature gets misused.
