Scientific overview
NAD+ is a naturally occurring dinucleotide coenzyme found throughout living cells. One of its fundamental biological functions is serving as an electron carrier in oxidation-reduction reactions involved in cellular metabolism and energy production. Beyond its classical metabolic function, NAD+ serves as a required substrate or cofactor for several enzyme families, including sirtuins, poly(ADP-ribose) polymerases, and CD38 and related NAD-consuming enzymes. Because of these functions, NAD+ metabolism is widely investigated in cellular energy regulation, DNA repair, mitochondrial biology, gene regulation, metabolic stress, cellular senescence, and aging-related research.
